Ma Liping Chinese

Ma Liping Chinese textbook: For students 6 to 16 year-old
http://www.mychineseschool.com

Introduction:
The purpose of the Ma Liping track is to provide motivated students and families an opportunity to learn Chinese in a Chinese only environment at an accelerated pace. Students will need to be able to commit about 30 minutes daily on preparing for classes, reviewing what has been taught, and completing homework and other assignments. Families' support and involvement is also expected. Families are encouraged to provide a Chinese language environment at home for the students. Students should be comfortable with using Chinese only to communicate with the teacher and fellow students in class. Students are also expected to take an initiative in their own learning, e.g. preparing for class in advance, reading additional materials on their own (or with a little help from parents), or completing a reading or writing project in addition to classroom assignments.

Ma Liping Chinese textbooks were compiled by Dr. Ma Liping, founder of Sitanfu Chinese School in California.

Characteristics:
  • Teach Chinese characters first. Pinyin is introduced later so that the students do not develop a dependency on Pinyin.
  • Focus on character recognition and reading. The abundance of reading materials quickly develops the student’s reading skills.
  • Content rich in Chinese culture.
  • Well designed, multimedia homework re-inforces what is taught in the classroom. Summer homework is included to facilitate continued learning through the summer break.
